Karnataka Railway Network Nears Full Electrification Amidst Significant Infrastructure Investments
KARNATAKA, November 2025 —The Indian Railways is advancing its infrastructure development across the country, with significant progress being reported in Karnataka. These initiatives aim to enhance operational efficiency and passenger safety through modernization efforts.
Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna announced that railway line electrification in Karnataka has reached 97 % completion, with the objective of achieving full coverage by the end of the year. The state currently has projects worth Rs 7,844 crore underway, and Indian Railways is also adding 10,000 new coaches to its fleet.
The introduction of advanced safety technology like Kavach, which automatically stops trains to prevent accidents, is a key development. In addition, 61 railway stations are being upgraded at a total cost of Rs 1,900 crore, with specific stations such as Birur and Kadur slated for improvements under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
The Kavach system is scheduled to be installed over 1,700 km of tracks in Karnataka for an estimated Rs 3,500 crore. Further infrastructure development includes the completion of 644 railway overbridges, and the ongoing development of 1,662 km of new railway lines. A rail coach factory is also planned for Yadgiri with an allocation of Rs 200 crore.
These comprehensive upgrades highlight India’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its railway network, improving connectivity, and ensuring a safer travel experience for passengers nationwide.
