Kochi Metro Phase 2: Third Rail Traction System Bids Submitted by Three Firms

KOCHI, November 2025 — The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is forging ahead with its Phase 2 expansion, submitting bids for a key contract to electrify the new corridor using a 750 V DC third-rail system. This contract marks a strategic advancement for urban mobility in Kerala.

Phase 2 comprises an 11.2 km elevated corridor known as the “Pink Line” linking JLN Stadium to Infopark II, spanning 11 stations. KMRL’s decision to employ a third-rail traction system, rather than an overhead-catenary system (OCS), reflects a deliberate response to the densely built environment, narrow viaducts and limited vertical clearances encountered along the route.

Three firms have submitted proposals for the “Design, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning” of the 750 V DC third-rail system and associated works. The winning contractor will deliver the system over a 24-month period following award, ensuring timely integration with the Pink Line's construction schedule.

The civil works package for Phase 2, valued at approximately ₹1,141.32 crore and awarded to Afcons Infrastructure, has already commenced. The third-rail electrification contract is the critical next step in sequencing the line’s full operational readiness.

By opting for a third-rail solution, KMRL aligns with a growing global trend in metro deployment within constrained urban corridors delivering a compact, visually less intrusive power supply system with efficient installation in challenging environments.

As Kochi Metro progresses on its growth trajectory, this procurement highlights the agency’s commitment to deploying advanced, space-efficient technology. The successful implementation of the third-rail traction system will not only support the operational demands of Phase 2 but also serve as a benchmark for future metro projects navigating similarly complex urban landscapes.
