NOVEMBER 2025 IPOH, MALAYSIA– Maintaining the integrity of vital rail infrastructure is paramount for operational continuity and public safety. Recent events highlight the ongoing challenges faced by railway operators in protecting their assets from theft and vandalism. An incident involving an attempted theft of railway cables near Ipoh underscores the critical need for vigilance and robust security measures within Malaysia's rail network.

In a swift operation, staff members from Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) Ipoh Signaling Unit successfully apprehended an individual attempting to steal railway cables. The suspect was found near kilometer (KM) 181.945 carrying a bag containing 16-millimeter (mm) KTMB cables, along with cutting tools and a saw. This proactive intervention prevented potential damage to essential signaling equipment.

KTMB has emphasized that such acts pose significant risks to train operations and public safety. Trespassing into KTMB premises is a prosecutable offense under Section 126 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, carrying potential fines. Furthermore, intentionally or negligently damaging KTMB property can lead to substantial fines, imprisonment, or both, as stipulated under Section 128 of the same Act.

The railway operator reiterated that all areas along the railway tracks are designated restricted zones. The successful foiling of this attempted theft serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of tampering with rail assets, which can lead to severe disruptions and endanger lives. KTMB remains committed to enforcing strict security protocols to protect its infrastructure.
