Malaysia and Thailand Launch Direct Cargo Rail Link to Boost ASEAN Trade
Malaysia is set to introduce a direct cargo rail service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok later this year, aiming to enhance trade and regional connectivity. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the initiative has received Cabinet approval and full support from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
As the current ASEAN Chair, Malaysia emphasizes the importance of intra-regional trade. The new rail link is expected to improve connectivity not only between Malaysia and Thailand but also to other countries, including Laos, China, and Central Asia.
The service will utilize existing railway tracks linking Bangkok, Padang Besar, Butterworth, and Kuala Lumpur. Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have been tasked with preparing for the launch within the next three months.
Additionally, plans are underway to revive the direct passenger rail service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, aiming to boost tourism and provide travelers with scenic views of rural areas along the route.
This development aligns with broader efforts to enhance regional rail connectivity, including discussions on extending Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) to the Thai border, further integrating Southeast Asia's transportation networks.
The Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok cargo rail link represents a significant step toward strengthening economic ties and fostering deeper ASEAN integration.
