Malaysia's 160km/h Electric Train Service Nears Completion, Halving JB-KL Travel Time
KUALA LUMPUR, November 2025 — After fifteen years of development, Malaysia’s Electric Train Service (ETS) is on the verge of full completion, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s rail infrastructure. This project aims to modernize passenger transport across the country’s western corridor.
The ETS operates at a maximum speed of 160 km/h and is planned to facilitate 22 daily trips, connecting key urban centres along Peninsular Malaysia’s west coast. A major highlight is the substantial reduction in travel time between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur, now estimated at approximately three and a half to four and a half hours.
Commuters have expressed strong approval for the enhanced service, citing it as a superior and more economical alternative to both bus travel and air travel. This improved passenger experience is expected to boost connectivity and convenience for travellers.
The imminent completion of the ETS represents a crucial step in Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its public transportation network, offering a faster, more efficient, and comfortable travel option for a significant portion of the population.
