Malaysia's High-Speed Rail Network Expands with New Kuala Lumpur-Johor Bahru Service
KUALA LUMPUR, November 2025 — A modern Electric Train Service (ETS3) between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur is scheduled to launch on 12 December 2025, marking a major upgrade in Malaysia’s rail connectivity. The service will be operated by KTMB and is an extension of the country’s electrified double‑track rail project down south.
The new trains are capable of reaching speeds up to 140 km/h, enabling faster and more efficient travel compared with older diesel services. Initially, operations will focus on the Johor Bahru–Kuala Lumpur route; longer-distance services (towards northern states) are planned for subsequent phases.
While the exact timetable and ticketing details are pending release, the expansion is expected to improve rail mobility for both commuters and travellers, reduce reliance on road transport, and potentially support tourism and economic activities in southern Malaysia especially in Johor and along stops at Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, and other towns served by the extended line.
As with any major transport upgrade, the effectiveness will depend on how well KTMB implements scheduling, maintains service quality, and adapts to demand.
