Malaysia's Prasarana Achieves Major Rail Reliability Gains, Targets Singapore's Benchmark by 2026

SUBANG, SELANGOR, October 2025 — Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has reported significant progress in improving the reliability of its urban rail network across the Klang Valley, signaling a strong recovery following several years of operational challenges. The achievement marks a turning point for the operator, which now aims to meet international reliability standards comparable to Singapore’s urban rail benchmark by 2026.

According to operational data, Prasarana’s five urban rail lines have recorded a substantial improvement in their Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF) performance a key indicator of rail reliability. The figure rose from 0.16 million MKBF in fiscal year 2023, which saw 118 service disruptions, to 0.54 million MKBF with only 24 disruptions between January and August 2025. This improvement reflects the company’s strategic emphasis on proactive maintenance, asset renewal, and enhanced operational investment.

Group Chief Executive Officer Amir Hamdan highlighted that the progress stems from increased maintenance spending, expanded technical manpower, and more frequent replacement of critical components such as train wheels and bearings. The operator has also adopted a more data-driven approach to system monitoring and predictive maintenance to minimize unplanned breakdowns.

Passenger feedback has mirrored these improvements, with fewer disruption reports and higher satisfaction levels among daily commuters. Prasarana’s renewed focus on reliability aligns it with top-performing regional networks such as Hong Kong’s MTR and Taipei Metro, which consistently achieve high MKBF scores. The company has set an ambitious target to reach 1 million MKBF annually by the second quarter of 2026, mirroring Singapore’s current reliability threshold.

Despite occasional incidents including a recent power supply issue on the Kelana Jaya LRT line Prasarana remains committed to its long-term reliability roadmap. Continuous investment in predictive maintenance, system resilience, and rapid-response protocols is expected to further enhance network performance and reinforce public confidence in Malaysia’s rail services.

As Prasarana’s turnaround gains momentum, it not only strengthens the Klang Valley’s public transport ecosystem but also provides a model for other regional operators striving to balance operational efficiency with world-class service standards.
