Ministry of Railways Approves Tambaram-Chengalpattu Fourth Rail Line Project

CHENNAI, October 2025 — The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of the fourth rail line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu. The 30.02-kilometre project will be undertaken by Southern Railway and is identified as part of the “Energy, Mineral & Cement Corridor”. The estimated cost is ₹757.18 crore.

This expansion will significantly enhance operational capacity along the busy Tambaram–Chengalpattu stretch, currently heavily used by suburban, long-distance and freight trains. With the existing three-line corridor near capacity utilisation of 87 % and projected to rise to 136 % if unchecked, the fourth line will ease congestion and support separate routing for suburban and express services. It is also expected to generate additional freight traffic of approximately 1.344 million tonnes per annum, yielding extra revenue of around ₹157 crore.

The approval of this project underscores the ongoing efforts to upgrade and expand India’s railway network, reinforcing its role in national connectivity and economic development.
