Mongolian Railways Converts Diesel Loco to Advanced Battery-Hybrid Traction

ULAANBAATAR, September 2025 — Mongolia is advancing its railway modernization with the successful conversion of a diesel locomotive into a hybrid model, signaling a move toward more sustainable and efficient rail operations.

The project involved rebuilding a 2TE116 diesel locomotive, originally manufactured in 1984. It has been retrofitted with two 400 kW diesel engines and two 440 kW batteries, enabling it to operate solely on battery power. This conversion reportedly reduces fuel consumption by 60% to 70%, offering both economic and environmental benefits.

This milestone demonstrates Mongolia Railways’ commitment to greener technologies. The hybrid system not only provides substantial fuel savings but also lowers emissions, which is vital for improving operational costs and reducing the environmental impact of the country’s rail sector.

The year-long project was a collaborative effort between engineers from Mongolia Railways and Chinese specialists from Dalian Lanbo Machinery Manufacturing, highlighting international cooperation in railway technology.

As the global rail industry increasingly focuses on decarbonization and efficiency, Mongolia’s initiative positions its railway network to benefit from technological advancements, contributing to a more sustainable future for rail transport in the region.
