MRT Putrajaya Line Disruption Linked to Cable Theft

PETALING JAYA, Oktober 2025 — The disruption to the MRT Putrajaya line, which forced trains to operate manually, is believed to have been caused by the theft of communication and signalling cables.

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad group president and chief executive officer Amir Hamdan said the company’s technical team, together with experts from the original equipment manufacturers, are carrying out comprehensive repair and restoration works to stabilise operations as soon as possible.

He said the system is still in an “intermittent” state and has not been fully repaired. “Operations are currently being carried out in manual mode,” he said, adding that 18 trains are operating and 40 free shuttle buses have been provided to connect stations along the MRT Putrajaya line.

The cable theft was detected in the Taman Desa area, and police are assisting Prasarana with the investigation. Amir said nearly 50 incidents of cable theft have been recorded this year an increase of about 100% compared with last year describing the trend as worrying because it poses risks to safety and operational stability.

“Cable theft cases not only affect the rail operation system but also other service operators facing similar issues,” he said.

Amir added that Prasarana has asked the government to consider tightening laws concerning the theft of public infrastructure assets.

Separately, he said Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd will continue to provide updates on the progress of service restoration to help commuters plan their journeys more effectively over the next two days.

In view of road closures and traffic disruptions related to the 47th ASEAN Summit starting tomorrow, he advised public transport users to follow alternative routes announced by Rapid Rail.
