Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor Achieves Major Viaduct Milestone, Eyes 2027 Operational Launch

NEW DELHI, September 2025 — India’s ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project has reached a major construction milestone, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure and advancing sustainable transportation. The project, a flagship initiative under India’s transportation modernization efforts, aims to redefine inter-city travel through the introduction of bullet train technology based on Japan’s Shinkansen system.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that approximately 300 kilometers of the planned 508-kilometer viaduct have been completed. This significant progress marks a crucial stage in the project’s development, moving India closer to its goal of high-speed connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The construction incorporates advanced engineering techniques, including the Full Span Launching Method (FSLM) and Span-by-Span construction, to overcome geographical and logistical challenges along the route.

The first operational segment, covering the 50-kilometer stretch between Surat and Billimora, is targeted for launch by 2027. The service is expected to expand to Thane by 2028, with full operations to Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) anticipated by 2029. This phased rollout strategy ensures efficient integration of the project’s extensive civil, track, and system works.

The development represents a pivotal moment for India’s rail sector, symbolizing the nation’s leap toward global high-speed standards. Once operational, the corridor is expected to enhance connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra, stimulate regional economies, and create new opportunities in infrastructure and mobility. Beyond improving travel efficiency, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail line stands as a long-term investment in India’s vision of a modern, connected future.
