Nokia has introduced a new commercial 5G radio solution designed to propel the global railway sector into a new era of digital operations

LONDON, SEPTEMBER 2025 — Nokia’s latest 5G solution is set to transform railway communications, paving the way for the transition to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), which will replace the legacy 2G GSM-R technology. This initiative highlights a commitment to creating smarter, safer, and more environmentally responsible rail networks.

The solution features the industry’s first commercial radio operating in the 1900 MHz (n101) band, ensuring compatibility with existing GSM-R systems for a seamless migration. Built on a cloud-native 5G standalone (SA) core specifically engineered for railway applications, it supports the full suite of FRMCS capabilities while offering modularity and scalability for deployment across regional or national networks.

By enabling automated train operations with real-time control and monitoring, the technology is expected to reduce energy consumption and emissions. It also enhances passenger experience through real-time information systems and strengthens operational responsiveness via integrated mission-critical voice, video, and data services on a single platform. Additionally, the solution facilitates smart rail maintenance through predictive analytics, minimizing costly downtime.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, stated that the technology lays the foundation for a new era of efficient, sustainable, and passenger-focused rail transport. Leveraging over two decades of experience with GSM-R deployment, Nokia is playing a pivotal role in FRMCS development and standardization. This advancement aligns with the broader industry trend toward digitalization, creating future-ready infrastructure for rail operators worldwide.
