Penang Port Set for Railway Track Expansion to Boost Logistics Efficiency
BUTTERWORTH, OCTOBER 2025 — Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport is planning a major upgrade to Penang Port’s railway infrastructure to enhance logistics efficiency and reduce traffic congestion in nearby areas. The initiative aims to strengthen the nation’s transport and logistics network by improving rail connectivity at one of Malaysia’s busiest ports.
The project involves extending the existing railway track within the port from 500 metres to 1,010 metres. This expansion will allow the full loading of all rail carriages within the port premises, addressing the current limitation where some wagons must remain outside the port area. The upgrade is expected to streamline container handling operations, improve port throughput, and prevent congestion caused by wagons spilling onto public roads.
To accelerate implementation and manage costs effectively, the Ministry of Transport is exploring a strategic partnership approach involving port operators and the Railway Assets Corporation. The plan includes reusing existing materials such as used tracks and sleepers to reduce construction costs and promote sustainability.
This development marks a key step toward optimising cargo movement and strengthening Penang Port’s role as a critical logistics hub for the northern region. By enhancing rail infrastructure, the initiative supports Malaysia’s broader goal of creating a more efficient, integrated, and sustainable transport system.
