Phu Quoc's First Urban Rail Line Poised to Transform Tourism and Economic Landscape
PHU QUOC, October 2025 — Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, is preparing to launch its first urban rail line a strategic infrastructure project aimed at improving transport connectivity, easing traffic pressure, and supporting tourism growth.
Spanning approximately 18 kilometres, the project carries an estimated investment of nearly VND 9 trillion (roughly US$ 300-360 million). Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with commercial operation targeted for the second quarter of 2027.
Developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) using a Build–Operate–Transfer (BOT) structure, the design allows for up to 70 % state participation, with the remainder provided by the project investor.
The first phase will link Phu Quoc International Airport to the APEC Convention Centre, traversing a mix of underground, at-grade, and elevated sections. The line is designed for speeds of 70-100 km/h, featuring 3-5-car trainsets and six stations plus a maintenance depot.
Beyond connecting major transport nodes, the new rail line is expected to open up the island’s resort zones, beaches, and cultural attractions to residents and visitors alike, offering a faster, more reliable and environmentally friendly travel alternative. By reducing dependence on private vehicles, the project aims to ease congestion especially during peak tourist seasons and contribute to the island’s goal of becoming a leading sustainable tourism destination.
The rail initiative forms a vital part of the island’s broader development strategy, aligned with its role as host of APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in 2027. The project underscores the emphasis on green mobility and smart urban infrastructure as the island works to enhance business, community and environmental outcomes for its tourism-driven economy.
