RAC Outlines Plans to Revive Rail Freight in Malaysia

The Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) is taking steps to revitalize Malaysia's rail freight sector. These steps include refurbishing idle locomotives and wagons to increase the nation's rail freight capacity without the high costs of procuring new rolling stock. The refurbishment is expected to be completed by 2027.

The Kempas Baru rail line was reopened in May after upgrades costing RM55 million. This 39.9km stretch has increased cargo train frequency and container handling capacity. RAC has requested proposals to develop six new freight stations to further enhance infrastructure and facilitate rail and road transport integration.

Looking ahead to the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government plans to expand rail freight capacity by procuring 44 new locomotives and 1,200 new freight wagons, demonstrating a commitment to a modern and sustainable rail logistics system.
