Rapid Rail Introduces Real-Time Crowd Monitoring to Optimize Commuter Flow
KUALA LUMPUR, September 2025 — Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd is set to deploy a real-time train crowd monitoring system across its Klang Valley network, part of its efforts to enhance passenger experience and ease congestion for its more than one million daily commuters. Acting Chief Executive Officer Nor Azmi Mohd Yusof said the system will allow users to see how crowded each train coach is before it arrives at the platform, enabling them to choose less congested coaches and queue more efficiently.

Alongside the crowd-monitoring initiative, Rapid Rail is upgrading its CCTV infrastructure to an AI-enabled surveillance system across its stations and facilities. The enhancements will include detection of suspicious behaviour, identification of dangerous objects, and recognition of gender-specific coach usage to support women-only coaches. Women currently make up about 60 percent of Rapid Rail’s daily ridership.
Women-only coaches are already established on several lines, including MRT Kajang, Putrajaya, and LRT Ampang and Sri Petaling. Nor Azmi clarified that any fare adjustments would require government approval, and no such changes have been directed as of this announcement.
By combining real-time crowd data and AI-enhanced surveillance, Rapid Rail aims to make commuting in Kuala Lumpur more comfortable, efficient, and safer especially during peak hours. These technological upgrades reflect the company’s broader commitment to passenger well-being and modern public transit standards.
