Siemens Mobility Boosts UK Rail Maintenance with New GBP 6 Million Northampton Facility
NORTHAMPTON, UK, November 2025 — Siemens Mobility has officially opened a new GBP 6 million Multi-Functional Centre at its Kings Heath Depot in Northampton. This state-of-the-art facility is set to significantly enhance the company's rail maintenance and modernization capabilities within the United Kingdom, reinforcing its commitment to advancing passenger train services across the nation.
The purpose-built centre is equipped to handle essential modifications and upgrades for passenger trains, offering both dedicated workshop capacity and a mobile engineering team. This dual approach allows for comprehensive enhancement work to be delivered either on-site or directly at operator depots. The investment has also resulted in the creation of over 30 new local jobs, bolstering regional employment and specialized rail expertise.
Modernization projects at the facility will encompass a range of improvements, including interior refurbishments, upgrades to seating and accessible toilets, enhanced luggage areas, and the integration of new power and charging facilities. The first major undertaking will involve enhancing East Midlands Railway's Class 360 units to improve passenger comfort and operational reliability. Siemens' expanded mobile services will also facilitate upgrades like Variable Rate Sanding technology and On-Train Data Recorders for improved connectivity.
This GBP 6 million investment is a key component of Siemens Mobility's long-term strategy to expand its UK presence and technological prowess in the rail sector. It follows significant prior investments, such as the GBP 240 million committed to the Rail Village in Goole and GBP 100 million for the Rail Technology Centre in Chippenham. The development also prioritized environmental considerations, achieving a 17% net gain in biodiversity through thoughtful landscaping and habitat creation.
The new Northampton centre marks a significant advancement in Siemens Mobility's efforts to transform rail travel for passengers. By increasing capacity and technical expertise, the facility solidifies the company's position as a vital contributor to the ongoing modernization and development of the UK's rail infrastructure.
