Six Nations Sign Istanbul Pact to Boost Eurasian Rail Freight, Elevating Iran's Transit Role
ISTANBUL, November 2025 — A significant multilateral agreement has been signed in Istanbul by Iran, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey, aimed at enhancing rail freight movement across the southern branch of the Eurasian transit corridor. This pact is poised to reinforce Iran's strategic position as a crucial gateway for container traffic connecting Asia and Europe.
The agreement outlines coordinated measures to streamline rail transit along this vital route. Key commitments include the implementation of unified and competitive tariffs, a reduction in travel times for container trains, and a decrease in auxiliary and customs-related costs. Furthermore, the participating nations have pledged to upgrade rail infrastructure throughout the corridor.
This initiative seeks to substantially increase the southern route's share of international container transport between East Asia and Europe, a market that saw nearly 60 million tons moved by approximately 20,000 container trains last year. Officials anticipate that the full implementation of these Istanbul commitments will redirect a larger volume of this strategic trade through Iran, generating considerable economic and commercial benefits for the nation and its partners.
The pact aligns with Iran's long-term strategy to become a pivotal connector between Asian and European markets, supported by ongoing infrastructure developments such as the Marand-Cheshmeh-Soraya railway. By fostering efficient rail transport, the agreement aims to build a more resilient and effective transportation network across Eurasia, contributing to regional integration and trade expansion.
