Terengganu Pushes for Transit-Oriented Development at ECRL Stations to Maximize Local Impact
The Terengganu state government is taking proactive steps to ensure that Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) projects at six East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) stations deliver long-term socio-economic benefits for local communities.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said that close coordination with the federal government, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL), and other relevant agencies is crucial to plan effective TODs—particularly in improving road access, public mobility, and supporting local businesses.
“Without proper infrastructure and planning, the ECRL stations risk becoming underutilized assets. We want these developments to bring real value to the people,” he said during a visit to the Besut ECRL TOD site.
Ahmad Samsuri also emphasized the need to upgrade surrounding infrastructure and drive community-centered growth around the ECRL corridor.
Also present were MRL CEO Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak and State Infrastructure Committee Chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat, highlighting a joint commitment to the TOD framework.
As of June 2025, ECRL construction in Terengganu had reached 91.79% completion—the highest progress among the four states involved, outpacing Selangor, Pahang, and Kelantan. The high-speed rail line, slated to be completed by December 2026, will link the East Coast to the Klang Valley and catalyze regional development
