Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor to See Major Boost with U-Tapao-Trat High-Speed Rail Expansion

THAILAND, October 2025 — Thailand is set to significantly enhance its transportation infrastructure with the planned U-Tapao to Trat high-speed rail line, a key component of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development strategy. This ambitious project aims to bolster tourism and economic growth by creating vital links between major airports and popular destinations on the country’s eastern seaboard.

The proposed extension will span approximately 190 kilometres, connecting U-Tapao Airport in Rayong Province with Trat Province, passing through Rayong and Chanthaburi. The initiative is designed to link major airports and key tourism hubs, offering faster travel options. The estimated cost for this infrastructure development is around 101.7 billion baht, with initial phases focusing on the U-Tapao to Rayong segment.

This expansion is expected to unlock the tourism potential of Eastern Thailand, increasing visitor numbers to provinces like Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat, and consequently boosting local economies through higher demand for accommodation and services. The project also aims to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation, while improving overall transport efficiency and reducing reliance on congested road networks.

Despite initial economic studies indicating a negative Net Present Value, the project is deemed crucial for the long-term viability of the eastern tourism corridor. Discussions are ongoing with the private partner, Asia Era One Co., Ltd., and a formal decision is anticipated as part of the government’s current term.

The U-Tapao–Trat high-speed rail extension represents a strategic move to integrate Eastern Thailand more closely into the national high-speed network. While financial viability remains a consideration, the project underscores Thailand’s commitment to developing modern, efficient transportation to drive economic prosperity and enhance regional connectivity.
