Trilateral Meeting Advances Nong Khai-Vientiane Rail Bridge for Enhanced Regional Connectivity

THAILAND, September 2025 — A trilateral meeting involving Thailand, Laos, and China has been convened to accelerate the construction of the second Nong Khai–Vientiane Friendship Bridge. This initiative is a key step in strengthening rail and economic connectivity across Southeast Asia, aiming to enhance regional ties through improved transportation infrastructure.

The meeting provided updates on ongoing rail projects, including the Thai–Chinese high-speed rail initiative. Phase 1 of the project has seen two contracts completed, ten under construction, and two pending finalization. Preparations are underway for Phase 2, which will connect Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai, with tenders expected to open in 2025.

Discussions also addressed the development of a cargo transfer center in Laos, linking the new bridge directly to rail lines extending to South Vientiane and Thanaleng stations. The new Nong Khai–Vientiane Friendship Bridge will be located roughly 30 meters from the existing structure, with detailed designs being prepared by the State Railway of Thailand.

The project promises to deepen bilateral cooperation and enhance regional economic and security ties. By expanding rail links into Laos, it is expected to boost trade, investment, and overall logistics capacity, fostering greater economic integration within ASEAN.

This series of meetings represents a pivotal step toward advancing cross-border rail transport, with future discussions to focus on the specifics of the new Mekong River crossing and its integration with key stations. The initiative reinforces the region’s commitment to improving transportation networks and supporting economic development.
