Vietnam's VinSpeed Plans 350 km/h High-Speed Rail Link Connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio

Ho Chi Minh City, November 2025 — As Vietnam continues to prioritize infrastructure development, VinSpeed has proposed a significant high-speed rail project aimed at enhancing connectivity within the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area and its coastal regions.

The ambitious plan involves constructing a 53-kilometer rail line connecting the Ben Thanh area in downtown Ho Chi Minh City to the coastal mangrove area of Can Gio. The project carries an estimated cost of VND86.65 trillion (approximately US$3.3 billion) and is designed for a top speed of 350 kilometers per hour. VinSpeed aims to commence commercial operations by early 2028, with trial runs anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2027, following the completion of a feasibility study by the end of the current year.

This new high-speed rail line is expected to significantly boost regional transportation efficiency, potentially reducing travel times between the city center and the popular Can Gio district. The project could stimulate economic activity, support tourism, and improve access to coastal areas, integrating them more closely with the urban core.

VinSpeed, founded by Vietnam's wealthiest individual, Pham Nhat Vuong, is backed by substantial ownership stakes from Vuong-controlled entities, including Vingroup. The company has previously explored other major rail initiatives, including a proposed Hanoi-Ha Long Bay high-speed rail and expressed interest in developing the long-haul Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City high-speed line.

This development aligns with Vietnam's broader strategy to modernize its transportation networks and foster economic growth through large-scale infrastructure investments, positioning the country to better handle increasing passenger demand and facilitate regional development.
