WWII-Era Trolley Rails Unearthed Near Penang's Fort Cornwallis
During pedestrian walkway and landscaping upgrades near Fort Cornwallis, a pair of goods trolley rails, believed to be from World War II, were discovered on June 26. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow noted the find as a significant archaeological milestone, adding a new dimension to the fort and its surroundings. The 7.4-meter-long tracks, found with their original sleepers, are a physical testament to the area's historical military logistics infrastructure.
Manufactured in 1895, the rails' installation date remains unverified. Similar segments were found within Fort Cornwallis in 2017 and 2018, suggesting a railway line once encircled the fort, possibly extending 4 to 5 kilometers. This railway line was likely part of a light transportation system that the British and Japanese military used to transport ammunition, food, and fuel. Aerial photos from 1945 show the line encircling the fort, potentially linking to the Penang Hill Railway around the 1930s.
Further studies are being conducted to confirm the railway line's complete historical background. The National Heritage Department, George Town Conservation and Development Corporation, the Penang Island City Council, and the state government are assessing conservation options, including an open-air exhibit to preserve the rails in their original location for public viewing.
