Southeast Asia is accelerating into the future of high-speed travel
The Laos–China railway is quickly becoming a model for regional connectivity. Launched in 2021, the 1,035 km high-speed line links Kunming in China’s Yunnan province with Vientiane, Laos. The route features eight stations, operates twice daily, and takes just 10.5 hours — including border checks.
Since its debut, the service has:
→ Boosted cross-border tourism
→ Opened new access to Xishuangbanna and Luang Prabang
→ Proven the viability of long-distance high-speed rail in the region
Industry experts are calling it a milestone.
Laurent Kuenzle, CEO of Asian Trails, describes it as “a major leap forward in cross-border train travel in Asia,” offering passengers a modern, seamless experience that blends comfort with scenic exploration.
Thailand is next.
The Bangkok–Nong Khai high-speed rail project, set to link with Laos over the Mekong River, is expected by 2030.
And momentum is growing for a full pan-ASEAN network, potentially extending south into Malaysia.
Tourism authorities are already preparing:
→ New infrastructure
→ Curated rail itineraries
→ Cross-border collaboration with operators
The takeaway?
High-speed rail is no longer a vision — it’s a reality.
And it's reshaping how we explore Southeast Asia.
Would you take the journey?
