Thailand and Malaysia Railways to Revive Bangkok-Butterworth Train Service

BANGKOK, August 2025 —The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) have confirmed plans to revive the direct rail service between Bangkok and Butterworth. The service, which was discontinued in 2016 beyond Padang Besar, is set to be reinstated under a six-month trial agreement, marking a significant step in improving cross-border transport links between the two countries.

The 43rd SRT-KTMB Joint Conference served as a platform for both parties to advance a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing rail cooperation. These include efforts to upgrade double-track lines to increase train capacity and speed, streamline ticketing systems to allow passengers a smoother journey across the border, and ensure proper inspection and certification of rolling stock to align safety and technical standards. At the same time, both sides emphasized the promotion of rail tourism as a means of boosting travel and trade between Thailand and Malaysia.

The reinstatement of the Bangkok-Butterworth route is expected to encourage more passengers to travel by rail without the need to change trains at Padang Besar. By providing a more seamless and convenient option for cross-border journeys, the service is anticipated to strengthen regional connectivity, support tourism growth, and stimulate economic activity.

In addition to reviving the long-distance route, Malaysia’s popular “My Sawasdee” tourist train, which currently terminates in Hat Yai, will be extended to Surat Thani. This extension further reflects the commitment of both Thailand and Malaysia to expand their rail services, enhance regional infrastructure, and consolidate cooperation in the transport sector.
